2.25 diesel valve seals

G'day all,

A quick question for the gallery: I'm replacing the valve stem seals on my 2.25 diesel. I have a handful of seals from an aftermarket engine gasket and seal kit I bought a few months ago. Some suppliers seem to be indicating that the inlet and exhaust seals differ from each other. The eight seals I have all look the same.

Is there is difference?

Parts I can find include:

ETC4751 Valve Stem Seal, Exhaust

ERR1510 Valve stem seal, Inlet

The engine in my car is originally from a 1978 SIII.

Whoops. Sorry.

Just had a closer look at those seals (actually took them out of their plastic bag this time) and of course there are four of one type and four of another.

They actually don't look too flash as some are out-of-round from being packaged.

I might order some genuine ones.

Either way, if anybody can confirm the right part numbers that would be great.

The seals are different sizes for exhaust/inlet valves, that's why you have 4 of one size etc, can't remember which is which, one fits the valve stem and the other fits inside the valve guide IIRC cheers Dennis

Its the *inlet* valve seals which have the spring around the top.

Hey Mike,

Are you sure? The exhaust valve seal I have is listed as ETC4751 and when I have looked for pics of this as a listed part, they have looked like this:

I'll look into it a bit further.

I can only quote from the LR series 111 (published by Land Rover Ltd.) Repair Operation Manual.
Cylinder head. diesel overhaul. sect. 12.29.18
"39 Fit the oil seals, fitted with springs, to the inlet valve guides.
40 Fit the oil seals,with external projectors, to the exhaust valve guides"
With the little pic. shown, its clear enough for me.

Hey Mike,

Thanks for the info. Well that looks pretty clear. It does seem odd that lists and pics from suppliers contradict this. I wonder what an "external projector" looks like? It will be interesting to see what the old ones look like when I remove them. Anyway, no rush - I will proceed slowly (which kind of typifies the whole rebuild.... why rush now?)

Fitted the new seals as per the manual (thanks Mike) a few months ago. After a bit of tweaking, I got all the knocks and rattles out and the engine has been running as sweet as a nut, until a few days ago, when...

...it suddenly started a knock and rattle that sounds like it's coming from number one pot. I've checked the valve clearances (they're OK and haven't changed since I assembled things). Two things of interest, however:

Oil in exhaust manifold (same as it was before I changed the seals)
Oil around base of number one glow plug when I removed all four to turn the engine over and check for oil in the pots (the other three were dry).

I don't think (I certainly don't hope) the rattle is bearing noise or bottom end. It is exactly the same sound as it had when first re-started a few months ago (video on the Re-fit thread) and that was sorted by tweaking the timing, changing the valve stem seals and blowing any excess oil out of the pots.

Anyway, it's got me wondering: maybe I should fork out for genuine valve stem seals?

Only other thing I can think of is head gasket, and I prefer not to think about that....
