    Td5 Defender / Td5 Discovery Power difference?

Has anyone else out there noticed the different power output from the Td5 Defender and the Td5 Discovery?

Both are the 2495cc but there is a difference in the spec'd power output:

    Defender 90 kW @ 4200 rpm
    Discovery 101 kW @ 4200 rpm

    Any ideas why?

I noticed it a while ago, landrover detuned the engine for the defender apparently.

Why? Don't aske me, I don't know why you would bother.

G'Day Pheonix, I agree, don't know why they would do that.

Hey Incisor, I can understand the better fuel economy, but at the cost of 11 kW (more than 10%), does not make sense. Would be nice to be able to switch between 90 and 101 kW at will, sort of like a turbo boost controller

    Anyway, cheers.

I think it is to do with the size of the intercooler. TDI defenders were always quoted at less kw as well.

maybe its the other way around,,
maybe they increased the KW's because of the extra weight in the Disco's

Theres a dofference between the Manual and auto Discovery TD5 as well (101kw/300Nm - manual, 101kw/340Nm). I think its something to do with the amount of torque the R380 can handle, where the auto can take more. I originally thought the discovery had the higher power less torque for better on road performance where the defender had less power but more torque for better off road performance................

I also heard it had to do with the auto box. Apparently the lower figure is suppose to enhance the drivability of the manual Defender???? (or so a LR dealer once told me)

Another one of those great Landrover mystery's.
