Auto gearbox problem on Series 2 Disco?

Posted on behalf of Gareth

The auto gearbox on my '99 Series 2 seems to have problems with downchanges from 3rd to 4th under load, but I'm not sure if the symptoms are "normal" or not.
If anyone out there has a TD5 Series 2 auto, I'd like to get your experience of its characteristics.

Under load (say up a moderate hill) when the box changes from 4th to 3rd at about 80kph/2200rpm the box sounds like it's "slipping" (presumably torque converter working?) and the revs go up to 3200ish rpm for 5-15seconds before EVENTUALLY dropping to 2600rpm (presumed locked in to 3rd). Is it supposed to do this, or should it go to 2600rpm pretty much straight away?

It once did the same thing not under load, on a flat freeway, and seemed to be "stuck between gears" for about 3-4 k's!

Hmmmmm not being a slush box guru i cant really help but it sounds like the sort of thing that may become expensive without qualified inspection.

Its probably just the torque converter locking up after the shift. It also wont lock in 4th below 80km/h.

Normal behaviour. On the other "stuck" behaviour, you might have to have the ECU checked for oil contamination. This was one of the symptoms my truck had ahead of the discovery of an oil contamination problem. Mine is a '99 TD5 auto.
