    rotating the diaphragm wheel

So, I was reading about rotating the diaphragm wheel to get a bit more fuel.

mine is a 97 300tdi auto with the boost upped to 18-20psi at the turbo (roughly 16-18psi at the manifold)

I pulled out the diaphragm plunger and rotated it to the longest travel (ie "full fuel) and took it for run... it felt better, but not a huge increase and only tiny bit of greyish smoke.

Then put it back to stock and took it for another run... again, I'm not if there was a difference!

I need another opinion, so I got the mrs to come for a run. we timed 80-100 in 14.6 secs with the wheel in stock position. Then swap to the "full fuel" setting and did the same run on the same piece of road... 80-100 in 10.4 secs!

So why isn't there a heap of black smoke at "full fuel"? is it because of the extra boost?

I have an EGT on order to make sure I'm not running anything too hot, but with the lack of black smoke I doubt it's getting too hot unless I hold it at full throttle for a long period of time.

I turned mine from the stock setting to the "steepest" and noticed a difference in HP, with only a tiny bit of black when she's floored. Any more is just a waste of fuel. Get rid of the middle silencer, and add a K&N air filter to the mix, you will hear the turbo spool up faster, definately feel the difference....

Thanks, I'll have a read. I was using that PDF that's been floating around.

I've already deleted the middle muffler, but I'm considering going to a 3". Still no K&N, but I'm thinking of using an early Disco round airbox, if I can find one.

I tried all the above myself, my diaphram was originally on the leanest side of the cam so turning that made a huge difference but in the end paying a pro to tune the injector pump was the best money i spent and the only times my car has gone to a shop[MR auto], mine was tuned when i fitted a full front intercooler and then again after i fitted an mtq water cooled turbo and 3 inch exhaust. I built my engine[300tdi] and converted it to auto[110] on the driveway at home but when it comes to tuning that pump it was well worth paying an expert

I did notice that mine was not on the leanest setting. Being an auto, I expected it would have been turned up slightly from stock.

I will go to a full front mount intercooler and 3" exhaust, then I might consider getting a pro to tune it.

Who does good diesel tuning in Vic?

full front intercooler will make no difference at all until the pump is tuned to suit, same with the 3 inch pipe,
