    FL2 Rear Diff question.

Unfortunately my 2009 FL2 TD4 has developed the dreaded rear diff drone.

According to the dealer it will need a new diff kit, (approx $1600 job). The dealer has gone back to Land Rover to see if they will assist with the costs, although the car is no longer covered under warranty, it's only done 42K kms.

Anyhow, my questions is what exactly are the dangers of continuing to drive the car before the repair takes place? How much more damage could occur?

I can't answer the specific question, but...

at 42,000 kms, have you changed the tyres yet?

I ask because a dealer misdiagnosed mine. The "noisy diff" disappeared when the tyres were changed!

    Regards

    Hi Max.

    Thanks for the reply.

I recently changed the tyres, and although it made some difference, the noise still remained.

Seems to be a reasonably common problem but my bet is they weren't setup from factory correctly. I hope LR come to the party, if they offer a you pay for parts we'll pay for labour deal I'd go for it. I just had a look at the manual and doing the pinion bearing it looks like a lot of special tools are needed and involves quite a bit of labour removing and installing the rear diff itself. I wouldn't call it a job for the home mechanic.

As for driving around with a noisy bearing, well I wouldn't advise it. Not good to have bits of metal floating around your rear diff. Best to get it repaired quickly.

    Here's the LR symptom chart

There was a software update which altered the % of drive to the rear diff to reduce the load &, hence, wear.
So, I think the factory set up was OK, just lacking in the design detail a smidgen.
