    Exploding D2

    Long time lurker - new contributor.

    Purchased an My2000 D2 in Melbourne some time back - have only gotten round to the work recently. The old D1 300Tdi that it was to replace just keeps on going!

    The D2 was not a goer, the purchase price was good, so I trailered it home.
    The vendor was vague re the problems. He said the head needed repairs, and it had a blown head gasket.
    He also said that the fuel tank had been pressurised and had deformed the back floor. Sure enough, it was raised in the middle about 30mm.

    I presumed that the fuel system had been pressurised with combustion gases.
    However, when the head came off, there did not appear to be the damage you would expect. I replaced the head anyway, because of the proposition that the head had let go in a fuel gallery in a big way.
    Also, I could not find anything wrong with the fuel filler / breather.

    I got the motor back together this weekend, and went to prime the fuel system. I found the fuel fuse blown - correct 30A fuse. No life from the pump, so out it came.

    I had obviously undergone some stress, because it had broken the plastic rails that hold it together. It was a mess.

    The pump had undergone a high temp meltdown around the motor terminals. I don't know the flash point of diesel is, but the temperature at the pump terminals must have been some hundreds of degrees C.

    The fuel has obviously ignited around the pump, and caused a pressure wave, enough to deform the tank - and the floor above it.

    The tank was nearly full - included in the cheap price - and I think this was a blessing.
    If there was more air space in the tank, this could have had a larger flame front.

    Must have been an interesting trip on the way home - the vendor reckons the family was on board. The reason he was vague, was I think he must have crapped himself.

    I have searched this and other LR forums, and have never had this situation described.

    The truck will live, and a new pump is on its way. Still a good deal in my books. It came with new tyres, new alternator, clutch, and gearbox overhaul - all with recent receipts. Also a good lift and other goodies.

    I am intrigued with this failure - it is potentially dangerous.
    I will be checking the replacement pump for signs of distress.

    Has anyone seen or heard of this before???

    For diesel to explode doesn't it have to be under pressure...? Even if the contacts were hot enough to literally boil the fuel (I don't think that's even possible), and get the vapour to a temperature and pressure at where it would flash, that is just beyond me! Surely the breathers would let out any built up pressure, how on earth does that even happen with diesel? Petrol I could see a possibility, but wow, I'm intrigued!

    A very small quantity of petrol and a larger volume of air drawn into the tank causing an explosive mixture. Too much petrol vapour drives out the air and prevents explosions. Hopefully all the petrol has been burnt off, or I'd be getting fresh fuel....

    Diesel is a combustible liquid, it will burn at 60C.
    If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

    no, diesel needs to be under pressure to explode, it needs to be hot (well warm depending on your scale) to burn.

    you can also get a similar result from combustion pressure entering the fuel return system if you have a blocked breather on the tank.

    Try standing a jerry full of diesel in the sun for a few hours, pour some in a saucer and light, and when you get out of hospital tell me again that hot diesel doesn't explode. Pressure is not required to ignite diesel, heat is, pressure in a diesel combustion chamber produces heat which ignites diesel, Regards Frank.

    There is a difference between exploding and burning. Diesel will ignite (burn) at 60C (Frank's jerry in the sun) but needs an independent ignition source. To ignite without an external source requires a bit over 200C (I don't recall the exact figure but 215 rings a bell).
