Question Looking at 1999 defender, any tips.

    Hi all,
I am still looking at some defenders no 300 tdi crewcabs around but I did see a 1999 crewcab TD5 ,are these engines ok or a lot of work to keep on road and can TD5 be replaced with non computer engine. love Isuzu engine but lets stop dreaming 300tdi . Any advise would be helpful.
    Thanks Neil.

The td5 is good, they can be chipped so can go better, have a few issues like any diesel that are listed here in the threads. The only problem I had with mine so far ,touch wood was a leaking fuel pressure regulator at around 130k's , ive blocked the egr and put a straight thru exhaust but no other issues. Also I have not flashed or chipped it either but that is way down the "to do" list.

The Td5 engine seems to be extremely durable. The only specific problems would seem to be that some were assembled without an oil pump bolt being loktited, and they are prone to oil migrating along the injector harness to the cable connector, where resulting connection problems can cause all sorts of symptoms.

In addition, unlike some of the earlier engines, they do not stand overheating. A coolant monitor is strongly recommended. Unlike the earlier, non-electronic TDis, they do not have a camshaft belt.
