    lt95 can't get 2nd gear

    Hi guys,
I have a lt95 that I can't get into 2nd gear. All the other gears are fine. When attempting to shift into 2nd it feels completely solid. I've pulled the top off and the shifter gates look normal and aligned, it's just the pin won't go where it is supposed to go. Any help appreciated.

Sounds like the snap ring on the front of the mainshaft might have come off. I have only seen this happen once before and the symptoms were the same as yours. If you still have the top cover off see if you can move 2nd gear forward on the shaft with a screwdriver. If the gear will move forward (more than a few thou) there's a fair chance this might have happened. Remedy is box out, remove front of box and install new snap ring and reassemble, usually no other damage is done.
Did it happen suddenly or has it been over a period of time. Suddenly would indicate the above.

It happened suddenly. I suspect it occurred when I had to tow the vehicle and the tow began with the assistant driver, my other half, leaving it gear. Not the news I wanted to hear.

    Bit more info

Checked 2nd gear forward movement on shaft and it was around 2mm. Are there any other possibilities?

Sorry to say it sounds like my guess might be right. There should only be about .035mm or .003 in movement there. It is possible there is something else wrong like selectors but you can rule them out by watching them when you move them back and forwards between 1st and 2nd. Watch 2nd gear when you move the selector forward and see if the gear moves forward as well. If it does therein will be the problem.

Thanks Brian. Appreciate the help. Looks like the restoration project is growing in size.

No worries Pete, give me a yell if you need any assistance with part numbers etc.or how to do it. You may as well put a new type oil pump in while you have it apart, plus a new front gasket and possibly a new front bearing while you are at it. What's it in, RR or 110 County.

This one is in 79 RR. I've got another box, a later one from an 82 four door RR, that I could swap it out for. However, I am lead to believe this one is a low km box, relatively speaking, with about 270kks on it. It does feel very good except for the problem.

    Cheers, Pete.
