    Diesel queries

I'm interested in knowing if members have a preference for the outlets they buy their diesel. I've had it suggested that Mobil and BP have the best diesel and that Shell's is not as good.

I've also heard the suggestion that adding a bottle of two-stroke oil to the fuel tank (a ratio of 200:1) aids lubrication.

I don't know about the two-stroke oil but I am interested in your thoughts about your choice / preference of servo.

No preference on brand as most of the fuel comes from the same fuel terminal anyway
I tried the 2 stroke thing for 3 months in my old 300 Tdi , My opinion and it is my opinion from my observation is its a myth
If you feel happy to try it and waste you hard earned dollars knock your self out

Over the years I have bought most of the brands of diesel and petrol that are readily available.

I have never noticed any difference in performance or economy.

Any time there might have appeared to be a difference, it was pretty obviously attributable to some other factor such as differences in the completeness of the fill, differences in the proportion of short trips, headwinds or some similar thing.

I have never personally experienced any difference or had any problems no matter what brand I buy.

Hi Chris, hope you are well?

2SO Works OK in CRD engines to reduce detonation noise and possibly a slight MPG gain, but yes as you have found out makes no difference to the good ol' 300Tdi and absolutley so with the mighty 4BD1...

At this point, I only run Shell, and where possible, I get the "Extra",,, not all servo's have it though. Cant say its really noticeable re power, but on average I get roughly an extra 30K's out of a tank,, approx 70Lts. I have the canopy on the back/roof rack and roof top tent, so there's a fair amount of wind resistance all the time, so I get between 500-530K's a tank. Looking forward to taking it all off in a couple of weeks and seeing what the economies like then.

On the first trip up to Albury about 3 weeks after buying the car, I had to stop and get fuel at the Glenrowan BP. I put in $50 worth, which gave me just over half a tank. I had to fill up again at Wodonga, or I was never going to make it out to the farm, 30K's past Albury .
I don't know why, but I used as much fuel from Glenrowan to Wodonga, as I had used from Narre Sth to GR. Have never used BP since.

Haven't tried Caltex yet, but hoping to after Xmas.

Havent found any real difference in different "makes" of diesel.

About the only thing I can find between them is that Caltex Vortex MAY foam less, making filling easier.

As for the 2 stroke, I tried it in every tank for 8 months & measured the results. I could not determine any difference in economy or smoothness in my TD5.

My Disco TD5 runs better on Caltex than on Shell or BP. I've found that Shell or BP requires more throttle to get moving from a standing start and is slower to get up road speed. The engine is a little quieter but less responsive and also blows a little smoke on take off. I've purchased my fuel my various outlets and it is always the same. Caltex Vortex makes my Disco more throttle sensitive and doesn't blow any smoke; also makes it easier on hills than the other 2 brands. Fuel economy seems a little better on Caltex but haven't had a proper check

I haven't put 2stroke oil in it so can't say what effect it would have but I do use 'Diesel Power' every 5 or 6 tank fills.

I run diesel from the local United servo in the mighty 300tdi; because its pump price is still 1c a litre cheaper than the Woolies/Coles Caltex/Shell with the shop a docket discount. Doesn't seem to make any measurable difference power/economy wise over premium diesel in 300tdi.

I also like running normal diesel and not the premium diesel (in summer anyway) since I read an article about premium diesel by the Berrima Diesel people (reputedly know their stuff) who stated that they found premium diesel burns 50 degrees C hotter (exhaust gas temperature). Probably makes no difference in reality but still makes me feel better on a hot day.
