I understand it's called the drag link, but am not an expert by any means.
I am referring to the rear steering tie-rod which controls the RH front wheel.
I have managed to bend mine on 2 separate occasions in a period of 6 months. On both occasions off-road but NO impact, merely steering.
Had an earlier model Defender for 18 months and a County for about 7 years, neither of which suffered this problem.
Is this a design fault??

That one is the Track Rod. The Drag Link is the front one that connects the steering box to the left wheel.
I don't know that it's a problem in particular for the newer vehicles, it's pretty much a weak spot for all Defenders from what I understand. The Drag Link is likewise pretty weak. I've had them both off on my 92 build Defender and they are indeed quite flimsy. It may be different for the earlier County, but just about everything on a County was better built than the Defenders.
You could fix them once and for all by fitting heavy duty versions. The ones from Graeme Cooper in Sydney are 32mm Diameter & 8mm wall thickness. They might be a bit pricey, but I'll bet you never bend one again! See here and scroll down a bit.

I had the same problem with my '03 xtreme. Bent twice and to the shape of a banana on the second occasion where my wheels had a nice 30 degree toe out imposed on them.
I got a heavy duty one from a local supplier in melbourne called Fred Smith for $220. Same thing from LR is $450 as they say it is the one they fit on military LR's.
Also saw an execelent one in a recent LR enthusiast magazine (Feb '04, page 130) made by a yankie company called RockWare. http://www.rockware.net/rover/
It is good as it is already shaped like a banana but one that bends upwards to put the majority of the rod BEHIND the axle where it is less likely to be hit...
