Fabrication advice - 4BD1T angled turbo adapter

    Hi,

I need to fabricate a "curved" turbo adapter so that the mounting faces are approximately 50 degrees apart (see image below). The turbo adapter is for a T3 to a TK100 flange, which is an old Chrysler T3 flange. The internal dimensions of the flange are identical, however they need to be offset by approximately 50 degrees so that the oil supply and drain are in the right orientation. It's for a VNT turbo which, because of the VNT ring, only has 3 possible orientations which are 120 degrees apart.

Looking for ideas of how to best fabricate the tube that joins the two flanges.Ideally it would have provisions for a thermocouple and an external wastegate but not essential.

    Cheers

    Bojan

I would suggest that you source some butt weld fittings (Std Wt), possibly using Short radius elbows, an equal tee with suitable flange for the waste-gate and a Std Wt NPT socket weld fitting for the pyrometer fitting.
You would need to crop the fittings, remembering to regrind the angles before welding. Tack weld together to ensure fit, then fully weld.
Butt weld fittings are available from Blackwoods, OneSteel & others.

8mm RHS do the job? I have parts of a tractor ROPS which is heavy RHS that's rolled round 45 deg and 90 deg.... Cut and trim to suit and the jobs done... What's the I.D left to right and top to bottom?

Thanks Simon, internal dimensions are 45mm x 57mm. (EDIT: 45mm top to bottom, and 57mm side to side)

You could do a lobster back by segmenting RHS or round pipe. Or just cut two side plates to suit and then bend the top and bottom plates to match the curve you placed into the side plates

Similar to that, but I reckon if you cut a piece off the side off some heavy RHS - leaving about a 8mm flange on each edge - then bent it up for the top and bottom plates it would give you a nice radius in the corners (smaller flange would be easier to bend). Cut side plates to match the curve and weld it up.
That way you could go to a bigger RHS with larger corner radius to match with the flanges.
