Hi Mick
As I understand it, your intended purchase is one of the (very many) 300Tdi's that have the potential for the Timing Belt problem. It falls within the VIN range requiring the second of the upgrade kits produced by Landrover. Notice that the term is 'upgrade' not 'rectification', because rectification would be admitting to a fault, and then Landrover might have to foot the bill!
Anyway, if the modification has been previously done, there should be a blob of yellow paint about 2" long on the left side of the timing cover. Alteratively, there should be some documented evidence that the rectification, sorry, 'upgrade', kit has been fitted. Look for the Kit part no's in the service records.
Here's the details of the VINs affected and the required kits:
Kit 1 (Part no. STC4095K) to be fitted to:
Discovery MA 081991 - TA 200000, MA 500000 - VA 542370, TA 700000 - VA 711273
Defender MA 939976 - VA 101256
Range Rover MA 647645 - MA 664120.
This kit contains; front cover, timing belt, crankshaft gear, tensioner, idler, FIE pump bracket, side cover, gaskets, dowels and fasteners.
Kit 2 (Part no. STC4096K) to be fitted to:
Disco VA 542371 - VA 558898, VA 711274 - WA 748935
Defender VA 101257 - VA 129096
This kit contains; timing belt, crankshaft gear, tensioner, idler, gaskets and fasteners. Also a crank shaft seal for Discovery VA 548520 - VA 558898, VA 716697 - WA 748935
Defender VA 107351 - VA 129096
Hope this helps.

Hi as Mick has said if the kit has been installed there should be telltale Yellow blobs on the timing cover. when we purchased our Tdi, I was unsure whether the kit had been done, the service book stated the belt had been replaced at 98000 but the Vehicle didn't have the blobs of yellow!! So we just factored in the cost of doing the kit after we purchased, as it turns out the sod who did the kit didn't follow the bullitin and paint the Timing cover, but hey it was piece of mind and now we know!!!!
So you can't allway's tell by just looking at the obvious, it's better to just play it safe

G'day All,
I just had the second of the two kits mentioned, installed in late January. Next time - do I replace just the timing belt, OR do I go the whole kit again? (to be sure....8)
Crawfy told me about the yellow blobs a week or two ago and I don't think anyone's bothered to paint my timing cover either...
Thanks,
Rob.

Hi Rob
Once the kit has been installed, you only need to replace the wear items in future. However, as a matter of course, I'd replace the tensioner, idler if you have one (i.e., not 200Tdi Defender), and the crank & cam seals as well as the required gaskets. The seals are optional, but if you pulled it all down that far, it'd be a PITA to do it all again if one of them starts leaking, and they're only about $25 for the pair (genuine) from a good parts place (or $70 from a dealer). :x
