For what it's worth I replaced the 3.5 with a new 4.6 lower end and rebuilt the top with 3.9 EFI, heads and stage 2 cam. The EFI uses GM 5 litre injectors as the originals would have been working close to their capacity after installing a Wolf 3D EMS.
The extra power (never have to flatten it when off roading) has not affected the ZF Auto and we have done over 100K.
It was certainly well worth it.
    Just another hoplessly overcapitalised Rangie!

Yes it is insured as a 4.6, and has been through two insurance companies and been declared both times, once through TCIS when we were in a club and the other current.

    Hi Richard,

As a matter of interest, what kind of fuel consumption are you experiencing with the 4.6 Block.

just another engine to consider, Leyland P76 4.4 Litre. Same engine as LR except for deck hieght. Heads interchange so can take injection or carby setup. Parts are still available. Think about it.
