L322 Ignition Barrel/Steering Lock
Hiya all, I realise this is a common problem but I'm just wondering if there have been any advances on the problem of the stuck ignition barrel in the L322 Range Rover caused by the faulty steering lock.
I've read other forums suggesting lubricating the sticking steering lock mechanism and/or tapping a switch into Fuse 18. Has there been any other solution discovered besides replacing the steering column?
Rick's 4WD Centre (who I trust) says he's seen more problems with the actual ignition barrel mechanism than with the steering lock mechanism/ECU. But that seems to contradict overseas owners' experiences?
(PS My vehicle is a 2002 Range Rover Vogue which has had all the other common problems gradually rectified (front airbags, front diff/driveshaft, air suspension pump)).
Thanks
Update, my local (Byron Bay area), Rover expert Phil discovered it was the solenoid on the ignition key as Rick suggested. For the moment, he's disconnected it and all works as it should. Though of course, this means the steering lock is bypassed. Considering how problematic that system is, I only see that as a good thing!

Hi there
I appreciate this is an old thread, but could you elaborate on the solenoid and where it is for disconnecting?
I had a key that wouldn't turn, so removed the locking pin, now the key turns fine, but the car won't turn over, it appears the steering lock isn't always disengaging, therefore causing issues....I Think
