    Question Cheapest Turbo upgrade 300TDI

Well the time has come to replace the turbo on the defender. Its still going but departure is imminent. The shaft has excessive movement. Now I have searched numerous posts but can find no definitive answer. I can purchase a second hand unit, purchase a turbo cartridge or a $480 turbo of evilbay. Or i can source an alternate one from the wreckers. The million dollar question.
Which alternate turbo have you used, what from, cost, and how hard to setup. sny benefits. I class myself pretty handy with tools so doing it myself is not an issue. Money is the issue i dont have enough for a 1700 upgrade kit.

Had a Mitsubishi TD04 fitted to a 300Tdi Defender by a western Sydney turbo company so don't know what was involved in adapting it to replace the Garrett. Is standard fitment to many 2.5 litre engines including volvo. IIRC cost, drive in / drive out was considerably less than a replacement Garrett.

It was water cooled and came into action at around 1300RPM instead of 1800RPM with little noticable change throughout the rest of the rev range. Possibly pulled a little better up hills but no figures or comparisons to verify this - just one of those gut feelings.

    Maybe worth enquiring about.

That is the same set up on my defender, i paid $700 for the water cooled turbo 2nd hand and it is a straight fit[you use your LR manifold elbows] and plumb into heater hoses, Bazzle i can sell you a good 2nd standard turbo for $100 if your stuck.
After the turbo you will want a 3in exhaust and a bigger intercooler and then a injector pump tune, all$$$

They appear to be available new for around $300 now.
    Have a look here Mitsubishi TD04 TF035 4D56T L200 2 5 Litre Water Cooled Turbo Turbocharger | eBay

Would need to check if this was actually the model that bolts straight onto the 300Tdi manifold though.

Sorry, can't assist with part number/s - it was many years ago.

The one I've provided the link to is water cooled though so maybe if you contacted the seller he may be able to advise suitability as a 300Tdi replacement.

The problem is not what turbo to fit but where to get a manifold that will fit it, sort that and you can pretty much make anything fit.

Those Mitsubishi TD04 turbo's require the 200tdi exhaust manifold. I believe MTQ still do the kit, not sure of the costs.

The TD5 turbo is also a good upgrade. From there a GT2056 wastegated is good for ~30psi clean on one of these engines.

    200tdi manifolds are T2/T25 pattern.

With supporting mods of course. Not my fault if you lift your head.

I bought a genuine Garrett turbo for my 300TDi from Landy Imports Australia on eBay (landy-au) for under $1K, based near Newcastle, NSW, running well, ask for Rick, Regards Frank.
