    Maxidrive Locker Issue

I have a problem with my front locker. I bought the whole axle assembly 2nd hand and it sat in the shed for a while before I got around to fitting it, I have installed it now but there seems to be a problem. The locking mechanism appears to be working and the locked light is coming on but if I lift one wheel off the ground and try to drive the wheel spins and the light flashes on and off.

I am fearing that there are some splines stripped somewhere? Would it be most likely to be the 1/2, shaft dog clutch or Extension spline on the diff center? Is it possible to get spare parts? I suppose the only way I will know for sure is by pulling it apart but just wondered if anyone had any problems like this before.

Pull it apart. You know you really want to. Lock it first pull out the actuator side axle and inspect, if all is good pull off the actuator, if all is good pull the short side axle and remove the centre. You will find the problem and you get a fresh oil change as well.

I think you'll find they are only doing rear maxi for Salisbury diffs.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

MR have a few left over Maxi parts for the Rover diff so worth asking, I got the sliding dog and a few other bits I needed for a front Maxi a couple of months ago.

Have you checked for a broken axle, Regards Frank.

A friend recently got my rear locker working, but it had been assembled incorrectly and couldn't move. I can't help wondering whether yours might have a similar problem due to sitting around for so long and getting a bit gummed up or corroded. Why not pull the actuator block off and make sure everything inside slides as it should. You said the light comes on, but it could be possible that it comes on before the mechanism fully engages.

I don't know whether this might help, but it can't hurt. And it will only take you 10 minutes.

x2. The actuator block and dog engagement is the first thing to check.
Once you remove the actuator and tongue you should be able to easily engage the locker with a screwdriver (front axle jacked up and slowly turning one wheel).

Yeah the locker is engaging ans the light comes on. I think the light will only come on when the dog clutch is fully engaged. With one wheel up on an axle stand the locker engages and the wheel is locked when you try and turn it by hand but if you try and drive off the axle stand the wheel turns and the light flashes on and off.

You need to pull the actuator block off the diff housing (4 bolts) to see what is actually happening.

Have you inspected the oil for shiny bits???
