Hi Roverray,
Believe it or not I just did this job on my 3.9. If you read through my thread of 30th November on Page 2 headed "Tin Head Gasket" there's much useful info on how to do valve stem oil seals in situ. In particular the replies of Peter51 provide info on suppliers of a valve compressor and air fitting kit for compressing valves in situ, apparently available on ebay.
I didn't end up needing the special tools as I had a home made air fitting - that screws into the spark plug hole and has a air hose nipple attached for pumping up the cylinder with compressed air to hold the valves shut while compressing them. Made up a valve compressor out of the forked end of a conventional valve compressor and used several washers to get it positioned at just the right height under the head of a rocker shaft pedestal bolt and then used a piece of water pipe to lever on the other end and down went the valve easy as pie. Moved the whole rig to the next pedestal bolt hole as I made my way along - once all this was together took literally 5 to 10 minutes for each inlet valve.
