    Replacing Clutch Master

    Last night. Fun job that...not. :x

    Things weren't feeling quite right with the clutch and my hunch was that the master was the likely culprit. It's already had a replacement according to the service records about 50,000km ago. The guy had put a PBR master on instead on the Girling orignial (probably after he fainted in the dealer's spares lounge). 8O PBR no longer list a master for Defenders, and they no longer list a kit for their masters. :roll: The nearest the local brake place could get was some brand I'd never heard of before. The kit was about $20 odd, would it fit the PBR master though? It should be pretty close was the reply. :? Hmmf, how much for this 'other brand' new master then? $185. 8O Bugger that! 8O Went to my local LR parts man and got a new master from him for $77. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img] It's a plain wrapper jobbie too, but for that price I'll risk it. :wink:

    Though it would be straightforward, and the actual remove pedal box, replace master & re-install pedal box part was. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif[/img] It was the bleeding that turned out to be a right PITA. You need hands the size of a small boy to reach between the exhaust and the chassis rail to get to the bleed nipple on the slave cylinder. Then, once you've jammed your hand where it doesn't quite fit, you cant get any movement with a ring spanner to open the nipple. :x Had to resort to an open ender canted...risky stuff with an old slave cylinder that's been hanging there for ever. Fortunately the nipple cracked open without me rounding it off.

    The next bit is the bleeding. No, not the bleeding on the back of my hand from the exhaust bracket. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif[/img] And not the bleeding on top of my head from the corner of the door I left open and forgot about when I crawed out from under the car. :x But he bleeding of the hydraulics. Nearly a full bottle of fluid later, the clutch still felt like a slightly wet doggie do-do to step on. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif[/img] Had to resort to stomping on the pedal whilst bleeding to get the air to move out. Just as well it wasn't an old master I was trying to bleed in.

    Finally got a good pedal so I jumped under to just get the bleed hose off and make sure the nipple is tight, didn't bother dragging the lead light back down there 'cause it'll only take a second. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img] Torch in one hand (a 4 D cell maglight) spanner in the other...couldn't quite get my sore and bleeding hand back between the exhaust...manoeuvre about a bit...dropped the (solid aluminium) torch on my head, said a nasty thing as I flinched back, and knocked the half full container of brake fluid I was bleeding into all over the driveway. :x :x :x

    Anyway, job done. It wasn't that hard really was it? :wink:

    Thats a funny story - good to see discos arent the only ones that are hard to bleed.

    You sound like me , whenever i pick up the tools the skin jumps off my knuckles in sympathy .......

    Bleeding 200TDI Disco clutch

    Well last weekend while visiting my ole man, landroverterry i has cause to bleed the clutch - mostly because after the 5 our drive from Sydney I arrived with hardly any clutch in fact at one stage i had to turn off the engine and start the motor in gear - to save the teeth in my box.

    SO after about 1/2 of air coming out of the system and 1/2 a bottle of fluid we resorted to pressure bleeding.

    Did you know that a coke bottle lid fits the top of the clutch master cyl?

    so any how wheeled out the compressor and with the bleed nut cracked open, the cyl as full as we could get it and a small hole drilled in the coke bottle lid, a small amount of pressure was applied, after about 3 minutes, purfect no more air bleed, and a full pedal.

    Will see how that works.

    Funny you should mention that. After replacing the master last March, I had to replace the slave last week. :roll: It can be done without removing the exhaust...just. I had the same fun trying to bleed the thing in again. This time I had it right in remarkably short time using one of those self bleed kits, but when I jumped under to do up the nipple and take the hose off, the hose came off first (accidently). :x Since I had the lid off the master and the bleed nipple was still open, the entire contents of the master ran out whilst I was frantically trying to close the bleed nipple. 8O Outstanding! A system full of air, a mess on (mum's) drive and a fluid soaked T shirt. :x :x :x

    It's amazing how inadequate this car makes me feel. ops:

    What size coke bottle lid fits?? Sounds like a good plan to me.

    You are not filling me with confidence in doing this job myself, and besides I'm running out of time.

    Anyway, BHSS say they can sell me a NEW master cylinder (alloy) for $55. This seems suspiciously cheap. Any comments ?

    $55 does seem cheap. But even though I paid $77, it's still a 'no-name' jobbie and that seems OK.

    Just have a go. It's not difficult, just potentially tedious. It may also simply be that I'm a crap mechanic and make things harder than they need to be. (As far as mechanics go, I make a good accountant apparently)!!

    Hi Guys
    Next time you are replacing a clutch master cylinder,take the old one (if possible) along to a trailer specialist(bearings/hubsetc).A mate who used to work for Coventrys once told me that most pommie vehicles(he is an immigrant himself) use the same clutch master cylinder as used on standard hydraulic trailer brakes.
    We were chasing one for a ford K series truck at the time,genuine $295,trailer (PBR) $29,it is nesesary to re-use the original pushrod to ensure you have the corect length.I think the one I used on the truck was identical to a series cylinder,I havent seen the later modern landy setups.

    BB, Inc: Perhaps under the 'type specific' section (is it in downloads?) there could be a section for tips: eg if there is a cheaper generic product available to replace a LR component, it could be listed.

    This would save us LR owners a heap of money. Whaddayareckon ?

    maybe you could collate said info and create the definitive AULRO listing of alternative parts...
