Sort of looks like an H with half of an 8 stamped over the RHS so it looks a bit like a B...?

Can I suggest you throw said trans away and replace with an R380? Unless you have a 200 Tdi defender then the R380 from the later 1994/5 onward is a direct bolt in.

The LT77 are harder to repair properly as there is a huge shortage of appropriate shims etc to set preloads.

suffix H is my guess, early 1991/2.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

the tranny shifts perfectly in all gears just has noisy 5th gear on overun and a drumming while driving only in 5th.
Im fixing this as i believe it to be the best one i.e. LT77s plus looked around at R380s and non under 1k around and buggered if im paying 1k when i can get a rebuild kit for the LT77 for around 500 bucks ........... and R380 would be unknown condition......plus R380 is just the next version of the LT77 so yeh not that much better from LT77s from what ive read.
Also main shaft looks as good as new so yeh.......

the B version of the LT77 has a completely different prefix and not 55 (which is a discovery) and from what ive read the discos started at D for a suffix and ended in H......

the r380 is a far superior trans, very different from the lt77 actually.

good luck with it, personally i would seize this opportunity to upgrade.

your a bugger, youve got me thinking........reason is it seems it was rebuilt not long ago by a retard......ie. seals leaking and bolts all wrong everywhere
would the v8 one fit the 200tdi LT77 bellhousing and would the ratios be too different? or no biggie?
also worth swapping to the LT230 transfer case? or keep original?
    cheers
