    Tdi 300 & Td5 Drive Shaft?

    Hi All,

Does anyone know if the early model Disco's D1 V8 1999 front drive shaft (gearbox to diff) is the same as a 2003 Diesel Td5's front shaft, mechanic just told me that the cardian joint is stuffed and will cost about $770 for a new one. I do have the V8 just sitting there as a farm basher and I could take the shaft off it for free!!!

Your mechanic is a rip-off merchant then!

It will fit but you'll probably feel some vibes.

Its not a straight swap unless you swap the front flange on the transfer case as well. Then it should fit but as Will says you may feel some vibrations. I'm not sure how prone to that a D2 would be running a traditional type shaft.

How much should the shaft cost approx.? Can I just swap out the cardian joint thing or doesn't the D1 have that joint?

D1 doesnt have a double cardan shaft unfortunately. The std shaft in the d2 can be rebuilt. You should find the part numbrrs on here if you search

D1 FRC8386 PROPELLOR SHAFT, FRONT, (-) 3900 CC, ALSO SERVICED AS PART OF A KIT

    D2 TVB000220 PROPELLOR SHAFT, FRONT, TD5 2.5L I5, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

The price you have been given is either a reco or not genuine prop shaft, I got the OEM one and it was about $1000. At 200k km it was time. Some have let go before that, they make a mess of your gearbox when they let go.

I believe it's a recon, he did say that the cardan may be ok but not likely due to how much movement it had, if it is ok it'll just need the 3 uni joints which I can supply through my own shop, I manage Ex SKF now Applied Industrial Tech. If I had the time I'd do the whole thing myself, I just might find the time.

Just buy the bits and do it yourself, UNI-joint replacement is not rocket science, even double Cardon joints. I assume hardy spicer would sell the bits...?

    Cheers
