Is it legal? = NO

Is it safe? = many people have done it without any problems

Tubeless type tyres with tubes is of course fine.

in short,

you can do it, just dont get caught in an accident where your flat tyre is a contributing factor.

The Perentie rims are 5.5" aren't they? Not strictly legal but plenty do it.

It is not the rim width that is the issue. 110/Perentie rims so not have the "safety bead" needed to legally fit tubeless tyres.

In 99.99% of cases it won't be an issue, unless you have an accident due to a flat tyre and your insurance is looking for excuses.

Is it actually illegal? After all, tubeless tyres were being used for years before the safety rim was invented. Certainly it is contrary to 'industry standards', but they are as much to protect tyre fitters from legal action as to ensure safety. And these are the same people who will happily sell you aftermarket wheels with safety ribs!

I was running 255/85/16 tubeless tyres on tubed 130 rims (6.5"). When aired down (psi in mid to high teens) I had multiple annoying episodes of easily popping the bead in ruts, mud etc when no one else did. Always at low speed so not a safety issue in these cases.

I dont know if not having the safety bead contributed but I stongly suspect so.

Used 110 Defender rims come up frequently for reasonable prices, however I'm not sure when the changeover to tubeless occurred.

Change over to tubeless occurred with the fitment of alloys. All Defender "standard" fitment steel rims were/are 5.5" for 110 and 6.5' for 130, both tubed type. Technically a 235/85 requires a 6" rim or wider.

Discovery 1 steel rims however are tubeless and 7" wide and will fit.

The "Wolf" 130 rims (6.5") came in either tubed or tubeless. I have a set of the tubeless ones. Part number is ANR4583. They do come up for sale occasionally.
