    New D2 issue

    Hi all,
I'm pretty new to the forum so wasn't sure to post this here or under general chat, but here it is...

I've had a 2003 D2 td5 for about 8weeks now - one or two long highway drives, town driving and a couple of entry level tracks around Mt Mee, near Brisbane.

A few weeks back I started to hear a whistling sound which seems to be coming from the passenger front side. I've googled here and on the net and the consensus seems to point to a warped manifold. Now, I'm not mechanical (I do hope to learn more as I go, in order that this car becomes a real hobby and i gain some skills and knowledge that will enable me to fix things up myself) and don't know enough to really understand the implications if it is a warped manifold??

So i'm asking what could happen if I continue to drive it?
I'm hoping to take it on the beach for a long weekend over xmas.

What kind of costs could I be facing for repairs?

Also my D2 (Diesel) engine seems a lot louder than any other that passes me on the street, could this be linked to the issue above?

Finally, I've download the D2 workshop manual, in order read up and familiarise myself with the car more. Other than this forum does anyone got any other hints, books etc that they think would be a good resource.

    appreciate you taking the time.

    Mike

    Hmmm...
Warped manifold normally tend to be more of a squeal than a whistle but anythings possible.
It just means that exhaust gas is getting out between the head and the manifold itself, instead of all of it going out the exhaust pipe.
Honestly? It probably won't do anything if you keep using it short-term but don't leave it for yonks.
Costs? I'd estimate $600 ish, unless you do it yourself. Lots of people say to cut the webbing out of it, others say use larger studs. Your choice.
As for the noise level, they're not a quiet engine but they're not that bad, are you still running the acoustic covers on the engine? Perhaps freshen up the engine/transmission mounts.
    Other than that, enjoy

My old Defer i cut the webbing out using a die grinder drilled all the manifold bolt holes slightly larger except the 2 centre holes , That motor as far as i know is well over 200,000 km/s with out issues that i know of

My guess is manifold stud pulled or broken.Drove mine for months before getting fixed.Very common.

For your 2003 model, I believe this to be essential, go to "shop", at the top of the page. Not sure about the engine noise, have a look under, does your D2 have the large centre muffler fitted? Some have been removed for better exhaust flow , makes them a bit noisier, Bob

On my d2,td5 at about 260k on a routine inspection I found 2 loose nuts on the exhaust manifold.Tried to tighten them and the studs broke.(Were probably already broken).I removed the manifold and got it skimmed by lokal engine-rebuilding shop ($100).The broken studs came out quit easy by pilot-drilling and eazy out. I made a little jig to get the pilot holes in the centre.Fitted with all new genuine studs and gasket, all good.To my surprise there was very little sign of black around the manifold.

One thing about manifold studs, they must be tensioned to the correct amount, otherwise they break easy. Always use a tension wrench. Bob

    Thanks...
I'll check on the engine mounts, cover is in place so I reckon I'm paranoid about the engine noise as I'm almost trying to find problems - since picking up on the whistling sound. And just being fairly new to driving the D2 from a smaller petrol engine car.

As for the centre muffler - I don't know. I'll check it out once I get back home.

Glad the work can wait a little while, -$600 isn't the kind of Christmas present I was hoping to give myself!

    Thanks again for the responses.

I'm taking it that thus means the centre muffler has been taken out which could mean slightly louder.
