Mate,
If it is the manifold, I recently did mine myself. Cost the price of skimming plus new studs/gasket kit.
If you are prepared to get your hands dirty and are a 'little' handy, it's do-able. Car be off the road for a few days though.
It's common and an easy to - medium DIY.
Broken studs will make it an easy or medium job. I had two and after drilling one slightly off centre it was relatively easy but a little scary to remove them.
The rest is a piece of cake.
Kit avail from everyones fave northside supplier, and I had a machine shop on our side of town recommended to me who did it as fill work. Took longer but reduced the price some.

With the main muffler removed, you will hear the turbo spinning up. Could this be the noise your hearing ?
I have removed the muffler on mine and can hear/enjoy the turbo singing.
