Hi Lance,
I have a Disco II with a sill mounted subtank to feed the range limited V8. I haven't spoken about this topic on this forum, so maybe you are looking for someone else. However I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about it.
Just to get the ball rolling:
1. Long Range Automotive, Lilydale
2. Sill tank has 50 litre capacity, but filler point is under rear wheel arches
3. Hard to empty the last 10 litres into main tank if driving in stop start conditions due to fuel sloshing and pickup getting dry when braking for traffic lights.
4. Cheap way of getting additional capacity and better weight distribution
5. Not as convenient as a rear replacement 150 litre tank
Cheers,
Lawrance

G'day Lawrance,
Ive always wanted to put a pair under my rangie, 2 questions for you. How far down do they sit bellow the sills? Pictures I have seen looked like between 25 and 50 mm.
How thick is the floor in the tank? knowing they are going to be subjected to some hard knocks while playing in the scrub.
Regards

Hi Rob,
From memory the steel is 1.5mm thick if I am not wrong. Doesn't sound terribly thick, does it? I can assure you that it is plenty strong. How far does it sit down? I guess that really depends on who the manufacturer is. With Long Range Automotive in Lilydale, they design the tank as far down low as the lowest part of the vehicle itself. In my case, they built the tank to the same height as the cross member that runs from one side of the chassis rails to the otherside, protecting the transfer case. They also taper the tank as it comes up against the bottoms of the doors so it doesn't look like a big square tank.
I do take my Disco offroaidng quite a bit and have managed to put a very minor "arc" in the tank when I was getting over a very large fallen tree. I was more disappointed with my driving technique than the minor reprofiling of the tank's shape. I think I lost 200ml of capacity with the dent, so it's very very minor. And this is pretty good considering the sort of offroading that I do - I run Simex 33" Centipedes and am now twin diff locked, doing lots of difficult trails, resulting in bent body panels, etc.
So since the tank has held up real well, I can recommend and vouch for the robustness of the LRA tank. My only gripe is that the pump takes a LONG time to transfer fuel to the main tank. And if you brake, all the fuel rushes forward and the pickup which is near the back of the tank gets starved of fuel. So the pump becomes noisy, but I suppose that's a good sign for you to turn off the pump.
Cheers,
Lawrance
