From memory that's correct. Its meant to stop oil migrating from the diff housing into the swivels.
How do you know they were leaking?

Hi,
Looking at a general opinion of the correct way this seal should fit, rave states it should be fitted with the lips trailing, fit swivel housing inner seal into rear of stub housing. My understanding to this is that you can se the spring that hold the lip in place once fitted in the housing.
My only concern i followed the above and the things leaked within a month.

Hi,
My diff oil is turning grey so I've the one shot mixing with ep90.
The seal is no8 on the picture.
Jim
The manual I have shows the seal (8) in your diag to be the right way round.
When I did mine some years ago I had a prob with oil migrating from the diff to the swivels and leaking big time. Had the seals the wrong way round and the front diff was overfilled.
No probs since.
You should be able to get double lip seals from a bearing place and it probably wouldn't matter which way round they go in. Also your swivels may be sealing too well and slowly forcing one shot out when they get warm into the diff......... you could try loosening the top filler plug a little and see how that goes.
Some people even turn the top swivel filler plugs into breather take offs.
cheers, DL
Does this help?

He's talking about seal #8 in the diagram posted, right where the swivel ball bolts to the diff housing. You're talking #23.
Good pics & tutorial to get your wheel bearings to last as long as mine. Dunno why LR changed the setup over the years.

Silly one... Have you checked the diff breather? i.e. could it simply be a build up of pressure??
M
unless you have double spring seals or scroll cut seals
the spring always faces towards what you are trying to retain.
if you want to stop the oil from the diff getting to the swivels then the spring faces towards the diff.
Some seals have a "lip" on the outside edge of the seal, this is the last part of the seal to seat into the housing youre fitting it into (this is how I usually pick the orientation for double spring seals.)
