    24v - 12v Battery Charger - Ignition Light

    My 101 is a 24v system and to charge my aux battery and some other 12v accessories I also have a 60amp 12v alternator attached to the engine in addition to the 24v 90amp alternator. Ad a result I have the standard 24v ignition light and a second "12v" ignition light so that I know if the alternators are no making power for any reason. The 12v light is like the main 24v light in that is on if there is no alternator power.

    I have an unused 24v to 12v 60amp smart battery charger that I bought some time back with a view of doing away with the second alternator.

    The installation is straight forward but I would like to maintain the "12v Ignition Light" and am not sure how I would rig this up. I would like the light to glow whenever the vehicle ignition is on but the charger is not sending power to the battery, like if it has failed. In reality in a serviceable situation the light should never glow because the charger will be making power as soon as the ignition is switched on unlike an alternator. The other issue is how to make a automatic test function to test the globe on start.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    wire up a VSR to the 12V output of the charger and use that to drive a relay.

    Use the NC side of the relay to earth a light

    pull power for the light from the 24V side and fit a 24V bulb

    Thanks - Sorry to be a bit thick - VSR NC - what are they abbreviations for?

    Won't the battery still provide power to the system even when the charger is not working?

    VSR = Voltage Sensitive Relay. Operates when the input voltage rises to a pre-set level, like when the engine is running at a useful speed and alternator charging.

    NC, or N/C = Normally Closed, when the relay, (either above or any common-or-garden relay) is NOT energised.
    NO or N/O, is Normally Open, that is, no contact or circuit ...until the relay is powered.

    Some relays have little diagrams on them, which show what terminals are connected or not connected whilst the relay is UN-powered, - the "normal" state. Others may have numbers such as 30, 85, 87 etc.

    If you follow the RH arrow at the bottom, it will point you to a very basic but useful primer about digital multimeters. Every Land Rover owner must have one....

    pretty much...

    VSR Voltage Sensitive Relay (its not really a relay its solid state with no moving parts but you can pull them out of discovery 1's,)

    NC Normally closed. The contacts on a relay that will normaly conduct when the relay is not energised.
    NO Normally Open The contacts on a relay that dont normally conduct when the relay is not energised.


    Another way of doing it would be to drive an LED through a zenner diode with a variable resistor so you can have the light come on when its charging normally. (or use the zenner to switch the relay)
