    Breakdown

In the middle of QLD on the Longweekend 150k from nowere when the motor died 300 TDi
Pulled over and tryed to restart when all I could get was a flat battery sound, had a jump start from another 4X4, no luck, had a tow start, no luck only the sound of a tight fan belt.
pulled the auto belt tensioner of and the motor started, US belt tensioner. NO found to be the front bearing in the Alternator had collapsed.
And you know you can't get one on a weekend.
    1. carry spare ALT ( then every thing else?) No
    2. carry a smaller belt 1400 mil long (1580 with Alt)so it bypasses the Alternator but still runs everything else.
Next buy new Alternator when get home $700 no thank you
Looking at putting a bosch one on, has anyone done this before..

    Hook
Have you tried an auto electrical shop to get them to replace the bearings? I had the same thing happen on my V8 Disco, the mob I took it to here in Darwin charged $180.00 to overhaul it.

    Cheers

I think hook, no matter what you decide to do,
when you get it home check the tension on the belt,,

it only has to NOT slip,, it doesnt have to be 1% off snapping.

overtension probably caused the last one to die.

I'm with Pedro. If the belt plays a C-sharp it's too tight! Changing the bearings in the alternator is not a difficult job to do yourself if the bearings are normal ball or roller bearings. Just be sure to mark the position of the end plates in relation to the main winding housing before you pull it apart. If the alternator has bushings, then some special tools will be needed and best left to a proper workshop (auto electrician). 8)

Call Paxton at British Offroad, they may have a replacement alternator for you.
