    td5 going forward

Have been reading that the new Mazda BT50/ Ford Ranger 5 cyl. engine is the old Disco td5 basically uprated by Volvo (4 valve head etc.)

Seemed a bit hard to swallow, but the global scene is ever evolving. From this old blokes perspective, not always for the better.

    Any comment would be appreciated.

I've heard that, I don't know that it is true though, haven't had a look. I can't see any disadvantages though, as with all the morons that buy dual cab utes, a fair few will be written off and if it is the same block it might be a good bolt-in for knackered old Td5's... I'm pretty sure a D2 with 540 Nm would be pretty good to drive...

    Cheers

We had the exact same post a couple of weeks ago.

Save us all and look up "PUMA" in Wikipaedia.

You will see that the Ford/Mazda engine is a varient of the Puma.

    Nothing to do with TD5.

Philip is correct, but a 3.2 litre TD5 would make for a nice Defender powerplant.

The reason I pondered this was that a mate is a workshop mechanic with our local Council.
A couple of weeks ago he drained/replaced the oil in a Council Ranger ute but when it was started the oil warning light did not go out. Fiddled around with the sender plug connections with the engine running (he said the access to the engine is another nightmare) but no go. Also the engine was no longer sounding happy.
Thinking it may be the oil pickup blocked? took the oil pan off to find the oil pump is chain driven ala td5.
Then contacted Ford dealer who supplied the vehicle (200km away) but they could not come up with anything.
He then searched on Google to find that there is a bulletin from somewhere which says that if the oil is drained and not refilled within 10 mins. the oil pump may not prime. It was not refilled for a couple of hours.
At this point the oil pan is still off waiting for someone to come and inspect, he is concerned that some bearing damage may have occurred whilst it was running dry.
The vehicle has travelled less than 40k.km.
