    Ooops...

    Hi all,

took our Rangey out for a run down to Goolwa beach today. Was pushing along through the sand at about 2,500 RPM or so no problem, no indication of heat past about 1/3 of the gauge, as it gets softer through to the end we stopped put into neutral and pushed through to Low ratio.

Rangey died, stone dead. Popped the bonnet and had a look-see.

The hose from the reservoir to the water pump had split at the water pump end spraying water up into the engine bay and down the front of the block.

Luckily there was a recovery 80 series - (oh the shame) passing by, and the guy gladly pulled us all the way back to the car park (for nothing).

I've got new hoses and better clips, but the issue now is that when you push the ignition past the utilities to start it. it dies, stone dead; nothing; it's not popping any fuses, but the utilties then refuse to come on for about 10-15 mins or so.

I suspect that water has gotten somewhere it shouldn't have, any pointers of where to start looking anyone?

I'm in Seaford SA, would welcome any tips/help.

    Cheers in advance.

Not looking to repeat this view from the Rangey; but much thanks to the guy at Goolwa who dragged me out!

Check, dismantle and clean every battery cable and earthing strap/cable and terminal. Coolant seeping into a cable joint won't help conductivity. When the lights go out, get a multi meter and check the battery voltage between its own terminals, NOT the cable ends, to see if your battery hasn't coincidentally died.

    Progress

    Hoses
I've replaced the hose, but the rest look a bit tatty so will look to get a full set - you recon would be cheaper order from UK and get one of my pals to bring over/post?

    Wiring
Here is the biggest issue, I've gone through the bay and checked all the connections including HT, took each one off in turn, cleaned with contact cleaner, refitted then wd40 outside, then tried the ignition - rinse repeat.

No Joy, but lo and behold, shut the bonnet went to manually lock the door, central locking goes, so i open him up and turn the key, hey presto V8 burble!

Still need to track this fault though, does anyone know where i can get a wiring diagram for the start circuit.

I am also going to replace all the ****y little sensor wires and crimps with something a bit beefier/better routed - any advice/suggestions?

It's always easier, quicker, and cheaper to order from the UK unless you can find someone worthwhile in Oz who can match the service.

It seems that on anything from Land Rover the earths are the usual suspects. Clean every earth lead mount you can find and I'd bet that would be the problem.

And get a dash mat to protect that lovely plastic dash top! Mine's disintegrated.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
