Disco Auto Transmssion
Hi all in August the wife, 2 kids and I are towing a jayco swan wieghing about 1500kgs fully loaded up to Cooktown. We are travelling via Bourke and Longreach then hitting the coast at Townsville, up to Cooktown and then allowing 6 weeks back down the coast to Melbourne.
Can anyone please advise if I need a tranmission cooler fitted. I have a 97 V8 auto Disco.
Many thanks

Hi Clicks,
I can't advise you about the cooler, but whether you get one or not, consider using the fully synthetic auto trans fluid from Penrite. I use it in my 5 speed manual Range Rover which llikes thin oil. The fully synthetic one doesn't deteriorate with heat as easily as the regular ATF.

Hi clicks,
seeing how you are going to do a few ''clicks''
i would probably fit an after market cooler.
your disco should have one already fitted, i dont like the
original ones i think the alloy aftermarket ones would do
a better job.

The standard tranmission cooler works perfectly fine. I tow a 3000 kg "Bushtracker" van with an auto TD5 and the standard system is quite adequate. Had a '96 V8 before and did a lot of heavy towing with no problems. A friend of mine tows a 3000 kg boat long distances with his '97 V8 auto and has never had it overheat. IMHO your 1500 kg Jayco should not tax the system at all. By all means fit an aftermarket item if you want to. Suggest you don't and buy a supply of fine reds to consume on the trip instead. Have an enjoyable trip through God's own country - it's a great part of the world.
