Disco to LS1??? Anyone done this??

Has anyone done the conversion to an LS1 in a Discovery???? If so what dramas with computer & wiring did you find???
After the prices I've been quoted for a second hand 4.0L Landy engine I'm seriously thinkin on it!!!

    Don't recall any D1s, but here is a RRC being converted: RRC 1990 ls1, t400 & LT230 conversion

It'd be for a D2, but might research some other options first from what I've seen.

I've looked into this a fair bit over the last 12 months, scouring about rave. The electrical part can be done I believe but you will lose HDC and TC without some sort of very fancy way of making GM and LR systems talk nicely.

If you want to use your tacho and temp gauge you will need to keep your motronic ecu and feed the required signals to them. The temp part is easy but the tacho signal comes from your crank positioning sensor which in turn picks up spaces or holes that have been drilled into the flywheel or flexplate, whichever tranny you have.

If you're keeping your existing tranny ie. an auto, you will need your motronic to feed the required signals to it but this might be hard unless you mount your LR MAF on the LS1. Easier using some aftermarket auto tranny controller like what Ashcroft sell. Also bear in mind that the ZF may not last with a LS1.

If you then want to use a GM auto such as the 4L60E, you will have major clearance issues with the front propshaft. Look at mez's webpage for his solution. Lots of work but I'm not convinced.

I'm going with a L98 6L and a 6L80E from a VE V8 and not bothering with HDC and TC although I'll have to invest in a oscilloscope to read the signals first and see if I can emulate them with signals from the GM PCM.

The project is not impossible but you have to weigh up the costs.

Hmmm, still trying to figure out what to do. V8 Rover or Chev, or Diesel of some description.

Yep, I have seen one, it was in a 4WD Action mag I think not so long ago, a green D1 looked good to, very tidy

Had a mate looking to do the same.

TRS down here do the conversion, but "Go to Woah" was just shy of 20K by the time it was all done and certified.

    Reckon I'd do a nice 4.6 instead.

Ouch. And that one on eBay is going for under $8k. It would be difficult to justify at that kind of cost.

I note though, that one on eBay has no mention of engineering. It would be worthy of a question if anyone was interested.

You might want to have a poke around the TVR forums too as the LS conversion is starting to gain in popularity.
