Hi Phoenix
I have the same problem, hope it dosent cause me too much grief on the weekend, they fairly take off on a steep desent dont they.
Andrew
Ok, on my weekend out last weekend, the landy poped out of low range a couple of times going downhill in low first (not a good time to do it).
Frightened the bejessus out of the the first time, and almost crashed another time (held it in fortunately).
What would cause it (the lever with the red knob) it jump out like that???

Sounds like a case of worn selector detent spring and ball on the transfer lever shaft, but first check if the Transfer lever is not fouling on the floor panels or ?? as it goes through the floor, or is loose where the lever bolts to the shaft , failing that take the centre seatbox cover off and you will find a 2inch or so plate held by 4 screws, just ahead of that is a Brass Hex head plug under which is the detent spring and ball bearing, if the spring is broken, weak , or the ball worn(flats on it) replace all components, under the plate is a pinch bolt secured transfer selector fork, check the pinchbolt is not loose and allowing the selector fork to move, if the problem has just started or seldom it may be only these, BUT check that the lever is not fouling FIRST ( can be caused by loose engine or g/box mountings.
Cheers . Rocket 8)
Hi Rocket
Thanks for the info, will check mine as it was annoying me a bit on the weekend trip.Had it droping out of high 2WD into neutral, then had to slow to almost a stop to re-engage.
Was another instance in slippery mud was in 4 low but no drive to the front wheels, had to go into high 2WD and back into 4WD low, thought I had lost the front tailshaft at the time!!! So there could well be a loose leaver on the transfercase.

G'day rocket, i'll check those parts. I can confirm now that the lever isn't fouling in the floor, so it must be one of the others. I noticed that one of my gearbox ount rubbers (the round things) is starting to split, so that could be part of the cause.
Thanks for the heads up (I wondered what that plug was for )

I have had this problem with an LT 85 (Santana) gearbox. Not a pleasant feeling
Some have told me to reverse a few meters after changing from high to low or low to high. This is not always possible.
My old windscreen had a sticker advising the driver to hold the range gear stick in position for a short while after taking off for the 1st time after selecting the new gear range.
try it out who knows.
