    Defender bonnet rattle

The bonnet on my 2004 Defender has an annoying rattle, particularly on corrugated roads. Any suggestions to fix the problem would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum!

Where is there movement, front or rear of the bonnet? At the rear, the hinges swing in a plastic bush. It can crack or be lost entirely, which would certainly cause a rattle!

I decided a few years ago to "upgrade" my Td5 bonnet by filling every void with expanding foam and lining all the flat metal parts with acoustic rubber foam. Really helped with engine noise suppression in the cab (which was why I did it) but I never had any problem with bonnet rattle or squeaks.

Made the bonnet much more rigid was well, which is not a bad thing!

The other thing you may want to do is adjust the rubber bonnet stops at the top of the radiator. They should just support the bonnet when it's closed.

Had an annoying rattle that I couldn't find as when I lifted the bonnet (300tdi) the rattle stopped. Took it to Graeme Coopers who lifted the bonnet and bent up the little keeper (1/2 way down) that the bonnet stay clips into. That stopped the bonnet stay rattling against the air cleaner.

Don't know the TD5 layout but sometimes the simplest things...........

    bonnet rattle

yea mine is rattling as well, on mine it is the rubbers on the hinges they are worn, and the top of the hinge is metal on metal, give your bonnet a bit of a belt with your hand and you will hear it.

Thanks for the help everyone. I should have said in my original post that the rattle is related to the hinges... I've replaced the plastic bushes (couple of times) once I tried to enlarge the bushes with tape, which worked for a while - but the not for long. Yesterday I fitted bonnet clips which has tightened it nicely but I've yet to test it in the field.
