Vlad I believe most of the guys in Europe use the tow jaw for recovery. I've read many threads on the lrenthusiast forum and it seems a numer of defender owners use it as a sole recovery/tow point at the back. See below:

The 2 bolt unit is rated to 3500kg and the 4 bolt to 5000kg. Compared to Pirate's solution which is rated to 3Ton which looks a great setup, I think it would do the job.
I would also trust the expertise of the guys responsible for setting up the Camel Trophy vehicles. I went back to some old Camel Trophy videos and can confirm that these guys did some horrendous recoveries on these specific tow jaws. They even put them on the Freelanders in the last years of the trophy.

Bushie I think you've got a great solution. If I was to mount hooks I'd do it the same way. I'm a culprit of some dodgy recoveries (including the tie down loops) but in almost every situation it was a dog to get under the vehicle which sometimes resulted in a snatch strap being tied around the bullbar  (I know I should be lashed)
In conclusion, my old man has an engineering business in South-Africa (Go you Springboks!!!) and I've discussed with him the possibility of making up these tow jaws and having them tested and rated for recovery. I'm hoping to have a prototype out here in July. If you guys are interested I'll keep you posted on the progress.
Henry.
