super charger

Has anyone ever thought of puting a small super charger on a 2.25 petrol landy motor.I was talking to a guy today and he thought it would work well and better than a small turbo. The superchargers come from the Jap wreckers for about $350 and should bolt on easily.

Hi
Thats an interesting idea!!!!!!!!!!I have seen the beasties you are talking about, the one I saw was belt driven with an aircon style clutch to switch it on/off.

Yes I have thought about it and I even purchased the supercharger and intercooler setup but pulled out of the whole thing after looking at the space needed.

They are bigger than you think I was gonna put it into my 3.5V8 Rangie and space was just not gonna let me get away with it.

But I havnt checked out the engine bays on the 2.25 pettys you probably have more room to play with than i did.

you might want to up the tin content of your big end and main bearings

that extra thunk in the top end tends to make the bearings ooze out the bottom end if you dont go to a tougher alloy....

should go great for a while tho

Go to one of the Jap engine imports and get a MR2/soarer blower for $250. These are great. A mate of mine stuck one on a stock 1275 mini works a treat. Make your manifold adaptors with mandrel bent exhaust pipe. I don't reckon I'd touch the bottom end if the engine is ok, just don't give it more than 5 psi of boost. I am currently working on a supercharged MGA to use in historic street sprints, I picked up an unused "Wade ro10 kit" from the sixties with nice cast manifolds in the deal. I have made a low compression head 7:1 so I can give it heaps of boost.

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like it might be worth a try but I have a few other things to do first.
I assume the mandrell exhaust pipe is bought from an exhaust place?
And that I buy the bends and straight pieces that i need and weld them together?
My friend suggested that 3 psi would be enough boost to get a good improvement in performance.
Have you any experience with turbos?

Have to ask why

but after that,, its all good advice,,,
yes the bearings will dissapear,,
yes it will go better,
but you are making a purse out of a sows ear,,,,

ask yourself what do you want the LR to do,,,
If you need LOTs more HP then change cars,,

having said that,,

all the usual engine changes will make it go faster,,,

Turbos aren't the go for this application really. A super charger will give much more torgue lower down. The thing with this mod is you don't need to rev it any harder and with sensible boost the engine will be fine if it is in good con. The boost pressure on an engine is determined by 2 things really the amount of air the blower can move and the amount the engine can flow. For example if you turn the blower at x revs to give 5psi and then you decide to change the cam or port the head the boost will drop but the cylinder filling wil increase. This is another advantage of low comp ratio as well, the bigger the combustion chamber the more charge you can ram in and the bigger the bang. A mate of mine has a 390 chev in an E type Jag, the engine flows heaps of air and we give 8psi of boost with a static comp of 7.6:1 The engine has 580fbl torgue at 2800rpm at 30% throttle after that it just breaks traction on the dyno. BHP is 690 at the wheel at 5000rpm at 70% throttle give it any more the wheels just spin on the rollers, it is safe to 7500rpm.
