absolutely correct, I think maxi drive just under $200 (my price list a year old) plus new ball joints, good idea if you are going to all that trouble if older car.

And yes in NSW very illegal to weld angle iron on. You may get away with hose clamping (S/S steel clamps) a section on, not sure if would work, worth a try until you saved the cash for maxi.

I bent mine a little while ago without realising it... scrubbed out tyres.

My service guys replaced it with stock...dumb. I should have forked out a bit more for the Heavy Duty and they should have had their wits about them because they know what I do with mine. :evil:

I don't make a habit of looking (or being) under vehicles if I can help it. Wouldn't be a safe guess series is similar to a 110 ?

Would it be a possible you could unbend it (with heat) then make a sleeve like section of waterpipe (or some other thick walled pipe) and slide, or drive depending on fit, over the rod with joints removed ?
Not "technically" welding anything to the steering components though I'm only suggesting as a band aid but might be better than a now weakened one. Should keep you on the road until a strengthened one arrives.

How did you diagnose scrubbed out tyres as a bent track rod? I've been noticing excessive wear on my rear tyres for a while and took it to a pedders and they didn't notice it. Is it really obvious when one is bent?

Mine was noticably bent. It didn't take long to do the scrubbing. I was noticing that the steering was pulling to the left so I got underneath and there it was.

Was yours a front or rear rod?

Are we talking about lower control arms or a different component?

The 'track rod' is at the front, connected to the wheel gear ( can't remember correct term) by ball joints, its the one they adjust for toe in and toe out aligning the wheels.

It hangs a tad low just behind the front axle. Usually taken out rock hopping or on river crossing lifting big rocks with one wheel jamming up hard on track rod hence the bending. :oops:
