'97 Disco TDi won't start when warm - please save me
Hi folks,
New here and, surprise surprise, I come in search of the truth
I have a '97 TDi that won't start after being driven for enough time to get it hot. It won't even turn over. Not even a click from the starter solenoid. I've found that if I let it cool down for half an hour or so (good when it happens near a pub) it will start first time, as it does whenever it is cool. I reckon there's a heat induced problem with the starter/solenoid but I'm not sure. Have poured cool water over the starter once and that seemed to speed up the cooling and restartability. Wondering what others think? Someone told me there could be a spring issue in the starter that is heat influenced. Any credence to this theory? I wonder if I should rig up some sort of heat shield between the turbo and the starter? Anyone had experience in actually fixing this problem? Cheers, Dan.

Double check the earth.
Simple check: Pop the hood, grab a jump lead and connect the battery -ve to the starter bolt on the bell housing.

I had the same problem with my 95 TDI, turned out to be the starter solenoid wire on the starter, it's a spade lug and it was the original one so it was a little worse for wear, just replaced the spade lug (had to remove the turbo hose) and have had no problems since.
Just a thought
