    Door catch help please

The door catch (latch) on my Defender is not working properly (seems to be an intermittent problem but getting worse)

On occasions the latch fails to hold the door closed - as if the door handle button is permanently depressed, allowing the door to swing freely on the latch, without catching.

I have also noticed that when pushing the door handle button there is a delayed mechanical 'clicking' sound from inside the mechanism so it sounds as if something may be sticking :?:

If anyone has any ideas on this or has experienced the same problem I'd be grateful for help because apparently a new lock mechanism (of course you can only buy the whole unit!) is about $170 plus labour to fit.

Is a second-hand lock mechanism an option ? The problem I can see is that the keys would not match with the other door.

    Anyone :?:
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Not sure about the "son of series" vehicles but alot of door closing problems with the series vehicles are as a result of movement of the catch on the piller rather than the door lock itself.

This may or may not be of any help but anything is worth a look before spending money.

I'm a series with have the two stage locks and mine do something similar. They'll catch on the first lock stop but won't lock shut on the second. Once I couldn't unlock the door with the key from outside and had to climb through from the back. I found a good squirt of INOX fixes them, also fixes your bonnet catch if it's too hard to get grease into. Every time you change the oil in the motor give them all a squirt and problem should disappear.

Alternatively I have seen people use an occy strap and tie a door shut. Not real safe but I guess does the job.

    Hi Vlad
Now I thought only us series pilots had to put up with doors with a mind of there own.You probably only have an striker plate adjustment,or a lubrication problem in the mechanism as sugested. With doors the best lubricant is graphite dust, available in a squirty bottle for $5-$10 from your hardware shop, being a dry lubricant dust wont stick to it and make the problem worse.
Have a look in the online manuals, should tell you how to adjust correctly.

    Mmmmmmm. Graphite.......

Thanks peeples. I'll give those ideas a stab when I get a chance.

I'm a bit tired at the moment - just came off a 11 hour shift and only had 5 hours sleep before that....

    G'day Vlad,

Tell me about the long hours.....! I've been head down for a while too!

If you should find the mechanism faulty and you get one from a wrecker, you should be able to separate the key mecanism from the door latching mechanism.

My guess is it probably just wants a good clean out and re lube.
