    Marks or corrosion on the Head

    Hi all what would cause this on the cylinder head and is now RS and cant be used.

    1993 Discovery 1 3.5l
    2" Lift, Cranked HD Trailing Arms
    31" Maxxis Mudders
    Tons of Radios, Tons of Spotties

    Cannot answer your question but

    Wont that clean up with a nice shave - now that you have them removed they will have to levelled anyway and might still be in specs,

    Possible, but it looks a little deep, im not sure how much can be taken off, I was gonna take them somewhere anyway have them check, they will probably tell me if there too far gone, thanks again Gary

    It's some sort of corrosion.
    Maybe the engine was laying on it's side for a while with a cylinder or two open to the weather - that might explain the rust you found in one bore.

    Yeah it corresponds with the rusty pot, ill see how they go if not ill find some more from somewhere, if I go that way might as well get bigger ones

    After seeing the internals of your engine, and it's only a 3.5 isn't it, I think it's better off being one of these:

    Those rings look like they coincide with the compression rings in the head gasket that have caused galvanic corrosion - i think thats the correct term.

    Yes im thinking the same thing with all the little things im finding, might just strip it down salvage the pistons provided there ok and whatever else I can abd souce another motor.

    Take the head to a head repair specialist, they should be able to repair that no problem, or get a second hand set of heads, would probably be cheaper, if you got the head machined to remove that corrosion you would need to get the inlet manifold and the other head machined as well, you're looking at least at 20 thou." off, Regards Frank.

    Thanks Frank, might just get another set of heads, whats your thoughts on a set of 4.6 or should I just stick with 3.5's
