The last two days I've had the oil pressure light come on. It only happened when the oil was warm and the engine was at below 600rpm (idle control valve doesn't work properly).
I've done 12000km since a top end rebuild, the last 7000 of which was on this 10w40 magnatec.
The oil seemed a little gluggier than usual (more sticky between the fingers), and I'm wondering if this could be caused by a hot running problem I had. For the first 4000km of this oil the engine ran between 97 and 103. But surely a modern oil would be able to put up with more than that. ..?
There was also a lot of suspended soot or sludge. The oil wasn't black, but far dirtier than it has been before.
I've changed the oil this arvo and put in penrite 10w50. So hopefully this helps, well see tomorrow.
But, could these two things explain the pressure problem?
Your oil is supposed to get dirty, if you have clean oil after 7000? then you have problems, unless you are running on LPG only, I assume you are referring to a V8, I used Magnatec 10W-40 for years in my V8 Disco and never had any oil pressure problems.
Save some of the oil and get it Analysed, email Castrol and tell them of your concerns, fit a proper oil pressure guage and see what it reads, Regards Frank.
Have you checked the gasket on the oil pump halves?
Judging by the old crusty oil around the rim of the filter body in your picture, it looks like you have oil leak(s).
But I don't think the colour of the oil itself is that bad.........
I always wait until the second oil change after changing brands of oil, to look for problems. I think that often the two different brands of oil don't mix well. Try changing the oil again, same brand and spec and see what happens.
The oil change does seem to have fixed it, or covered a problem up...
Talking to dad last night he was saying excessive heat will kill a mineral oil very quickly, and wouldn't be suprised if the overheating problem I had killed the viscosity and sheer rating of the oil.
Yeh, I will wait till the next oil change to see, especially as I've swapped from mineral to synthetic.
I spent a good few hours yesterday with all the extension bars listening like a stethoscope to the motor - very interesting. All the bottom end is a nice shhh from the bearings, except the rear main which has a rubble to it; but listening near the sparkplug and on the side of the block on the rear most passenger side cylinder there's a noise associated with cylinder speed and pull pressure - so I'm thinking a gudgeon pin is a tad lose (which could explain the oil light); it's not ring rattle as I know what that sounds like and the bore is in perfect condition. Annoyingly I've also got two lifters which are making noises, but can't be heard with the ear.
