Rear hub leaking

Hi all,
Noticed the brakes on my 79 RR were not working as good as usual today.

A quick check revealed oil/grease on the inside of the left disk.
Looks like a seal is not sealing (mental picture of a sea creature).

Looking in the workshop manual points to an oil seal on the inside of the hub.

So a couple of questions:

What size is the locknut & hub nut?
Are they tight?
Will a shifter get them off (I hate shifters, but I don't have sockets/spanners that big)?

Should I replace the bearings at the same time?
Does all of this come as a kit or individual components?
Should I do the other side as well?

Should I replace the brake pads (one will be oily) or can I clean it?

OK, that's more than a couple of questions

Harry,
I had a similar experience on my Disco, albeit on the left front wheel  . In my case it was the inner wheel bearing seal that blew, rather easy to replace.
As for the brake pads: As mine were fairly new (only about 2000 kms) when it happened I soaked them in petrol and brake cleaner over night, then thoroughly rinsed them and took off the uppermost layer with some sandpaper. They were as new afterwards...

Good luck!
Johannes

There are people who spend all weekend cleaning the car.
And there are people who drive Discovery.

8) the bearing locknuts size is bbigg. should be able to undo with multigrips, if you don't have bbigg spanners or shifter,
wash the bearings in turps and inspect them, then decide if you need to replace them, you'll probably get all the bits at repco sat morning,
and if the pads are really soaked chuck them, otherwise jojo's got the deal,
'cept i wouldn't leave them soaking that long.
have fun, its a good way to learn about the trucks guts.
remember to chock the wheels and put a safety stand under it,
dont wanna drop it on your foot, or worse.

Thanks guys

The job doesn't look difficult.
Never repaired axles/diffs before.

Just wanted to know of any tips/tricks.

And yes Harry, I always use chocks and stands when underneath.

If you can't get the bearing nuts undosed with multi's, you could always butcher them with a cold chisel and hammer!

If I wanted to butcher it, I'd use a screwdriver (instead of the chisel) and a ratchet drive (instead of the hammer).
That way I could ruin the tools as well

The guys over at the RR and Disco Forum suggested a 52mm tube spanner.
Sounds like a good idea to me.

I am assuming the front is the same, so the spanner will come in handy when the front ones sh#t themselves.

The collection of specialised tools is growing

Thanks for the tip LandyAndy.

I'll try locally to source one, but at least now I know they are available.

Might have a better chance of knocking good chunks off your knuckles too using the method you mention.

Forgot about the FWD mob in Vic.... thanks Andrew !
