    TDI alternate temp sensor location.

    Think i will be fitting an aftermarket temp gauge or maybe a watchdog or similar, where is a good place to tap in a new sensor preferably not in a hose ?

    If installing an Engine Watchdog my preferred sensor location is on the RH side of the head a bit below the #1 injector. There is a bracket there that you can install the sensor under. You can also use the thermostat bolts, but I don't recommend using anything on the LH side of the head as its influenced by the exhaust manifold.

    Gotta love the settable alarm on the Watchdog. Has saved me a couple of times now (I have them on 3 vehicles).

    if fitting a sender use the tapped hole into the water jacket on the top of the head, there is a short bolt in there now

    My understanding is the "Engine Watchdog: measures the head or thermostat housing temp not coolant temp, and the sensor looks like a large electrical ring terminal and you fit it under an convenient bolt.
