Question: I have a rebuilt 2004 discovery TD5 engine which had new pistons rings etc et cetera put through it. It has done a little under 2000 km since being rebuilt.
To rockers broke on the number 4 and 5 exhaust valves and every piston had and exhaust valve mark on it.
Also there was a really thick sludge through the top of the engine, I thought it would have been spotlessly clean
What oil were you using, did you mix oils at all, did you add any additives, have you kept a sample of the oil used?
Is there any diesel fuel getting into the sump, say via fuel injectors or cracks in the injector ports? get your oil analysed, Regards Frank.
not familiar with td5 but if tdi 300 with valve marks on piston (soot or physical) and broken rockers then hints at timing out ie broken or incorrectly set belt, seized valve stem? td5 is chain? could be due to failure of lube ie water? head gasket? water crossing sucked in water? was engine running ok until failure or running rough - what were you doing when failed? Soot on head - exhaust cycle followed by decent of piston, while exhaust valve still partly open, sucking some carbon back in - possibly one off event when failure occurred for what ever reason?
Hi all this is an update finally found the problem turned out to be a cracked head letting coolant into the sump contaminating the oil or so it seems engine back together turbo rebuilt and has done 300 Ks, so far so good thanks to your reply's.
