Thread: [D2] Long trip - what spare parts I need to have with me

Is it a TD5 or V8?
There a a few threads on this topic so do a search.
If it's a TD5 I would get hold of a spare crank angle sensor as this is the only sensor that will stop the engine running.

Take a spare air cleaner and fuel filter other than that do a thorough service and inspection before you leave and address any issues that you find or know of.

A nanocom or similar would be handy to have.

Presumably a TD5.Make sure your cooling system is top notch would advise fitting an extra temp gauge [Watchdog] and a low coolant alarm.Crankshaft sensor can prevent starting and worn/dirty starter solenoid contacts prevent motor turning over.Spare rear wheel bearing could be handy.I carried plenty of spares on a trip last year,as is the case ,never used any of them!

@eddy: yes, Plenty Highway one way, have no idea about going back, maybe just by south ? will see that.

It's better to have more parts than less. On my list is already:

-Spare wheel
-all filters
-Fuel pump
-Starter
-at least one break fluid pipe
-break fluid/engine oil/transmission oil
-thermostat


and anyway, is there any assistance in AU which is covering towing from outback ?

You can increase your level of roadside assistance.I think the max is about $7000 for a reasonable increase in the premium.I had coverage for $2000 with the RAC and used it all on a recovery on the GBR to Derby.I was not aware of the higher cover at the time I took the increased cover out.Check out your local motoring organisation.

if you use M R Automotive.........I am pretty sure they still do up a spares box based on their experience.....you only pay for what you use.

I have used their service once and it was piece of mind......the only part I needed I originally said surely I would need one of them but they convince me t throw it in.

Have a safe one.

Before you go anywhere, check the little hose down behind the turbo. If it feels even slightly hard, get it changed out. None of them are young anymore! Even if carrying a spare it will take you forever to change out in the bush. Water/Coolant loss is a lot real quickly.

replace anyway as this sucker cost me an engine

If you have ACE
A ace pump bypass kit (shorter belt, no ace idier pulley and bolts for bracket)
Leaking ace fluid causing pump to seize will stop you proceeding...
