Information on a electric trailer brake controller
Hi all,
I want to have a Red Arc EBRH (remote head trailer brake controller) fitted to my Defender 110 (into a spare pop out switch on the main panel). The auto electrician says he has fitted brake controllers on older model Defenders, but because mine is a 2012 model he is unsure if the computer (on board electronics) needs to be recalibrated as the lower current in the circuit from the unit installation will trip a warning on the electronics. They need to do this for Discovery and Range Rovers models apparently (so he said).
Is anyone able to offer some advice or technical explanation to this. I want a good job done of course but want to ensure I am not being taken advantage of. Or can someone recommend an auto electrician for this on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.
What do people think of these Red Arc remote head controllers for towing camper trailers?

Assuming Defender is the same as L322/D4/RRS - you need to get the "brake light signal" in the harness that comes from the Light Control Module to the Trailer Light ECU. Unlike older vehicles where you get the signal on the wire from the pedal switch.
No recalibration required, however if you splice into the wire that runs the car's brake lights, it will affect the error reporting.
I can tell you exactly which wire to use in the L322, refer to wiring schematic for your car.

Umm, I don't believe a P3 will give you any issues, it only looks for a signal from your brake light circuit which I doubt will bother your computer

If the brake light fails, the LCM will notify you. If the controller is on the wire from the LCM to the car's brake lights, this monitoring is not going to work - the controller will provide a circuit for the test pulse. If you don't care about the brake light monitoring then connect it to the first signal you find...
If you don't have a elec that has experience with them, take it to the dealer - and I NEVER say that!
