nominal pitting caused by the fire ring

not optimal in an ally block as it will cause weakening around the top of the liner which will then leak or walk.

If it was mine I would be looking at using this as an excuse to fit top hat liners.

    2 advantages.

    1. the steel in the top hat fits the fire ring almost perfectly so that wont happen again
    2. the liner is not going to move if its a top hat
    (one more for luck)
in the event that you get corrosion on the liner or a ring failure the things already top hatted so the liner can be easily done over again

Thanks Dave, I forgot the mention its a 3.5 block, also because of the fact this actually lines up with the corrosion on the head, could it have been caused by water as I think the motor had been sitting around some time before I got it,

given the head is the same material as the block, if the circle in the head is near perfect like it is on the block its still from the fire rings.

Yes water will help cause the problem but then you usually get rust on the inside of the liners.

Next question, can I just use it with a new head and gasket or should I deck it out, what do you think will happen, dont want to go the route of liners, or scrap it and find another block ?

if the edge on the liner is still sound it most likely should seal up on the edge of the liner under a new head.

It a project engine I got to build up and eventually replace my tired one in the D1, I have stripped it right down to the block I wasnt going to send it away but when I opened it up 2 cylinders were a but rusty and it took a while using molasses to clean them ip, im not happy with the way they look so im going to send the block to be chem cleaned, tested and honed, its already .020 oversize, the pistons are like new and the crank is goog too, im not confident in honing myself as ive never done it and I can get it done for a carton of beer through a friend.

Go and watch your friend, you should then start building your confidence.

And you might get to share a beer.
