    winch recommendation

    See plenty of those cheaper winches about, towbar mounts which I figured would be handier than front mounts as backwards is sometimes better than forwards. Already been suggested (certain chain store) that those types are nasty and cheap and that I'd need 15000lb pull, another recommended at least 9000lb pull... 8O .... either would comfortably lift the vehicle let alone help it scramble a slippery slope :!:

    Probably heading to a field day soon so what's the story without the sales talk for say me to go into harder teritory than gravel/mud trails through the forests rather than vehicle abseiling as 15000lb (6tonne) or six times even 9000lb or 4 times the vehicles weight is surely overkill ? :?

    RichardK has a real neat winch on his Rangie,it is a hydraulic drive(via a powersteering pump)
    I spose there are big arguments each way wether you go electric or hydraulic drive,I personaly would love a capstan on a series,just because they are a series kind of thing.
    In the latest 4WD Monthly there is a "Port A Winch",it can be used to winch from the front side or back,looks a great idea.

    Hi Jay,
    Yes I've put a Milemarker 10500lb hydraulic on the front powered by a dedicated pump so as not to interfere with the steering when in use. Also the RR PS Pump is low pressure and flow so is not really very suitable for a winch
    I bought the winch out of the USA and it cost a tad over $1800 all up. The PSpump I got from UK and that cost around $700 all up. There are probably cheaper ways to power it using a hydraulic pump and a magnetic clutch as hydraulic pumps are not made to be in continous use.

    Capstans are the dog clutch winch off the front pulley on the motor aren't they ?

    Most of our harvesting gear on the farm was hydraulic motor powered but they had fairly large tanks of oil to allow continuous use. One had a cooler much like a transmission cooler for the hydraulic oil in front of the radiator for the diesel motor but that was under a fair load all the time, drove a sweeper bar for windrowing the nuts. Be a bit difficult on a Landy to have such a system.

    Think I'll get a copy of the magazine today and have a read. :wink:

    The hydraulic resovoir for my dedicated pump is just a standard plastic PS tank, takes very little room. As soon as the digital comes back I'll post some pics.

    If you buy a Tirfor (H/Duty Hand winch) then you can use it from any angle, in any vehicle, save lots of money and climb a steeper learning curve every time you get bogged, as the hard work will be your reminder.

    Personally, I've got a tirfor and a capstan and a set of wheel chains for when traction becomes an ongoing issue (yet to use the chains though).

    I only make these suggestions because I'm a cheapskate. If money weren't an issue I think I'd go hydraulic, but then again, electric works, even after the motors drowned and may get you out of a river thats already already killed your motor.

    As to the first - not sure about those 'portable' electric winches as I've never seen one in the flesh but I suppose its no different to a Tirfor, but without the effort ?! I'd need convincing.

    As to the second - of course they suggest the bigger ones. They are also, not coincidentally, the more expensive ones. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img]

    I await with interest Richard for the photos.

    Think I'll stick with the powered option than pumping a manual winch handle. For few hundred dollars if it saves me once then I guess that's cheap insurance. Could always double the line to halve the weight through a pulley if I'm really stuck.

    regarding pulling power, It's not just the weight of the vehicle, but the opposing energy that needs to be overcome.

    ie : weight x gradient or weight x force of bog etc.

    The example being when you get stuck in mud wearing gumboots and you have to heave like anything to move.
