Electric, runs of your battery (good to have the motor running to charge the battery/s but can run with out motor running, till the battery/s go flat.

Hydraulic, runs of oil most likly your power steering pump or as other people have done, put in a 2nd pump just for the winch. (need motor running to pump the pump)

    &
PTO, Power Take Off. runs from the Gear/Tranfere box (has sharfts and uni running from G/box to winch need motor runnig) When using you put your Tansfer into neutral and main box into gear to get drive to the unit.)

some winches years ago came with a manual hand crank atchment so if the motor died you could you it by hand

Just as another thought I've been reading through an old 4x4 mag (Dec '91) and found ATECO EQUIPMENT in Sydney make a "front reciever" for the Warn winches. Appear to be agents so have to advertise Warn I guess. I don't even know if the business still exists.

However I thought their system is a ripper of an idea for those with serious electric winches that are hindered by them permanently mounted on the front, ie vehicle cannot be winched backwards easily.

The system uses a hitch of square tubing and a pin (bit like Hayman Reese towbar) mounted to the chassis rails. The winch sits in a frame similar to a cradle locked into the hitch with a shear pin and having a hitch at either end enables the vehicle to be winched forward or backward. Power provided by jacks at either end next to the hitch point. Just wonder about the current loss with such a long run of wire.

The cradle accepts most of the winches of then up to 9000lb which to my thinking is enough to pull the mounting system off the vehicle let alone out of a bog.

The beauty of the system is the vehicle can be winched back and forward but the greatest bit is the winch can be removed and stored in the vehicle until required. Save it getting stolen or the cable full of gunk before you need it. Most probably someone with a few hours spare and some tools could make one or just buy the premade thing from the company.

Don't list a cost but my only concern would be the strength of the mounting system.
