Leaf springs modificatin (?)

My stage one has heavy duty springs (9 rear, 11 front). I am decided to buy parabs, but not yet. Payload is huge but I don't need it-I never load more than 40%, usually less than 30%. As I can hear my backbone's discs rattling - idea is to remove some springs (4 at rear and 4-5 at front), grind and polish a bit rest of springs, cut those removed and put back on mounting plate just to keep clearance. Did anybody tried that surgery ? And most important for me: is this legal ??? adam

At a guess probably handle like jelly.

Probably not legal, as cutting the standard coils in cars is illegal, so is lowering but you can replace the springs with lowered, raised or uprated units so long as the original ride height is not altered more than 25mm. Probably transfers over to leaf spring applications.

AFAIK it is leagal to removeleaves from the pack but this must affect your largest towing weight.

It definately wouldn't me bore illegal than fitting parabolics.

Check out this thread on Outerlimits 4x4...

It has some good leaf spring design tech.

Taking out leaves will make ride more comfy, but wont be the same as para's.

para's make ride much smoother BUT at a price.

all front lany para's are 2 leaf from memory.

i have heard people with v8 lumps complain when fitting para's.

me i love em. makes my 88 ride better than a 109, no skipping bobing and lurching like the std springs tend to do on a shorty.

if you have a hardtop or carry a full load then 3 spring rears as a minimum.

    hope it helps

    Re: Leaf springs modificatin (?)

I'm building a SWB IIa offroader at the moment, and have already pulled 4 load leafs from the rear. I've done a SOA conversion with it and come out with a 2" lift. If you pull that many leaves I'd bet you will lower the ride height by about 3-4"! My suspension is very very very soft in the rear and from jacking it around now works in place of the front currently. This said I'm pulling 4 or 5 load leaves from the front also and hopefully this will rebalance the articulation, but it will have a super soft rocker and roller ride. This is also exagerated by the narrow chassis rails. In terms of legality you can raise or lower by 1/3 of your suspension travel in NSW according to the guidelines, though I'm not sure about Vic. You cant cut springs, though removing leaves isn't cutting anything.

Check the flat camber of the springwith that many leaves removed! Click to enlarge the pic
