Did you buy a Land Rover that has the paint held on by good intentions :?:

Did you buy a nice shiny Land Rover and then spend years driving it through Lantana :?:

Did you buy a Land Rover from someone who “stuffed it” by painting it the wrong colour :?:

Whatever the reason, many of us will at some time consider repainting our vehicles.

Now, while it might be adventurous (and cliche-ridden) to “plunge in head first” with “just enough knowledge to be dangerous” it can be expensive.

The solution :?: There are a number of sites on the web that, believe it or not, don’t include naked women. No, really :!: Some of these are great resources for the vehicle painter. Here are a few:

Having decided to paint your vehicle the next question is: What colour :?:

Assuming that you aren’t stupid enough to decide ‘Holden Hothouse Green’ or ‘Hyundai Putrescent Pink’ would look good on a Landy, you might think an original Land Rover colour is the way to go.

What is the go with poms painting vehicles with brush and roller?????

I lived next door to an italian bloke once who painted a 65 Chev Impala with house paint and a Wagner airless gun........looked CHHHHHOOOICE - not.

when it was hot - if you leaqned on the car the paint would "slip" anmd leave wrinkles, or a levis pocket stich impression lol !!!!

Having said that - My old man once painted a Toyota Crown in the backyard with a Wagner, and it was pretty good....

I did a Spray painting and panel beating course at TAFE a few years ago - wasnt a trade course but a "hobby" course. was good , learnt how to strip, prepare, prime, coat and rucb back and polish, then the teacher came along and assessed it and put a big scratch in it and then taught us how to feather and repair it..... was a good course, done at weeknights.

I got given 4lts of enamel "Case Tan" which looks similar to the babypoo yellow on my 109 van.You links will come in handy when I come to learn how to spray a Landy in springtime once the weather dries up a little!!

Don't think I could bring myself to paint any of those colours and nothing wrong with a paint brush or roller so long as it's view from 100feet. Although over the years I've seen some fairly ordinary work with a gun too I might add, including my own, :roll: decided to spray two pack paint in a mocked up booth in a mates garage. Bewdiful day not a cloud, roared into the shed and painted my car, then the weather decided about an hour into the painting that it should storm and brought out a brilliant flush to the paint job. At least it's even though I really must fix that one day. :?

Some colours that would look good on the series are congo green (old holden statesman colour), Artic white (slightly blue off stowe white), mist green (I painted the chassis this colour and will look better when the driveshafts are yellow), mission brown (looks like white paint and sump oil as used for painting fences and the usual colour for series 2).

Might be free Andrew but have some dignity. Paint the thing anything but that yellow and if you do, make sure you limo tint the windows so at least they can't see who's driving.

For a classic and presitgious Land Rover look, I like Bronze Green. An original Series 1 colour, but in a gloss, with an Ivory roof. I painted my SIII in this. 8)

You can VIRTUALLY paint an old series Land Rover and experiment on screen with colours. Great fun !

Hi Jay
The van isnt a long term keeper,goes ok but is 2 shades of babypoo yellow and black,the case colour is more tan than the original colour.It will eventually be sold,110 would be nice,but geting back into building "The Toy" and finishing would be better!!!!
Problem is we bought a cheap house 12 months ago which needs a little TLC!!!!!!

You havnt lived until you have painted a car with house paint and a paint brush, it is actually thick enough to cover up where you used masking tape to cover the rust holes

Vlad, you definately are the man of the moment. I am from the UK and moved to Sydney four monrths ago. In the UK it is fairly common practice to hand paint a Landy. Landys are cheaper and more common there and whilst a respray, especially on a fairly complex pattern of bodywork and galvanised support brackets etc would set you back $2000 for a possibly low grade job, handpinting is seen as the way for many to improve the looks of an old landy that even with repaint and in working order will not fetch much more than the cost of the paint job.
I immediately purchased a series 3 swb which whilst very sound and wonderful to drive and look at, needs paint. My first task was to go to the VIN for the paint code, guess what?? Leyland made in Australia no paint code. Thanks a million for your advice, if I was happy before finding the Australian Landrover owners site, now I am estactic. Well I am a pom so easily pleased. Yes I will definately be hand painting my series 3 and after asking everyone I have met here the answer pops up immediately,

PS I have just read a book and know who Vlad Tepes actually was, OUCH.
